Homeless man keeps Ballard clean during holidays

This fundraiser is now closed. Thank you everyone
for your donations and other offers to help!
$2,582 raised

Update 1/26: The Ballard News Tribune has published a story on Tim, so we’ve reopened the fundraiser for additional people who want to help.

Update 1/23: We’ve delivered the check to Tim, and we connected those you who offered other forms of help. And it was very timely: two weeks later, a thick blanket of snow fell on Ballard, and Tim took a little money to find a low-cost hotel room to stay warm. Here’s the full update.

Update 12/30: Wow, thank you everyone for your outpouring of support for Tim. He wrote a letter thanking all of you and the neighborhood of Ballard for your help. We’ll be delivering the money soon (he’s setting up a bank account) as well as connecting many of you in comments below with Tim to provide other assistance. Make sure you’re following us on email, Facebook or Twitter for an update, coming soon!

Posted 12/23: Unemployed and newly-homeless, Tim has become a bit of a fixture on Market St. in Ballard, sweeping the sidewalks for donations. “I have to be doing something,” he told My Ballard, explaining he’s not the kind of person who stands on the corner and begs for money.

He lost his job as a painter and jack-of-all trades at an apartment complex, and he’s looking for odd jobs and trying to raise money so he can get back on his feet. He says he gets $600 from the state each month for disability, but that’s not enough to survive on. “As soon as I get housing I’ll be fine,” he says.

If you’d like to help, you can donate a few dollars above the photo — we’ll ensure he receives the money directly — or you can post a message below if you’d like to contact him (we’ll email you.)

If you would like to help the homeless population in Ballard overall, we recommend the Compass Housing Alliance, Low Income Housing Institute and The Bridge Care Center.

  1. I would like to mail him a gift card to a Walmart so he can get groceries, dog food, or clothing/hygiene needs. I don’t feel sorry for him – I admire him for his courage and his perseverance in working through a bump in the road of life. I am anxious to see how he picks himself up, brushes himself off, and gets going again!

  2. May the new year bring you new hope, Tim. I contributed to the donation total with the hopes that you’ll get enough to help find you a place to live soon. Meanwhile, blessings on you and your precious dogs.

  3. Tim, I just donated to help you get back on your feet.

Thank you so much for the service and contribution you are making to our community. You are an inspiration to us all! I will be looking for you and your “babies” when I am out and about so that I can shake your hand and say thank you in person.

    Merry Christmas, Tim!

  4. I just donated and will be looking for you the next time I am in Ballard. Thoughts and prayers coming your way!

    • It’s like you’re on a mssiion to save me time and money!

      • Posted on Great to hear from you. Our creative angcey Evolved Digital (www.evolveddigital.tv) know all the secrets and I am sure they’ll be happy to give you some quick guidance if you need any

      • 16a1403535fI want to show my appreciation to the wreitr for rescuing me from this setting. Because of looking out through the world-wide-web and getting basics which were not beneficial, I thought my life was gone. Living devoid of the solutions to the difficulties you’ve fixed by means of your good short article is a serious case, as well as those which could have in a wrong way affected my entire career if I hadn’t noticed your blog. Your own knowledge and kindness in playing with almost everything was priceless. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I had not come upon such a stuff like this. I can now look forward to my future. Thanks very much for this expert and sensible help. I won’t think twice to propose your blog to any individual who should have recommendations on this matter. 195

  5. I’m looking for someone to paint the inside of our house and was wondering if Tim would be interested to take on this job. Any idea how I can get in touch with him?

    Thanks

  6. Tim – Thank you for reminding us to focus on what really matters in life. I’ve made a small donation and hope you and your adorable pups find housing very soon. You are truly an inspiration.

  7. If Tim is interested, I can facilitate getting a background check done so he he can present this to potential employers who might want to have him do work in his home. I do this for a living so have the ability to do this. It will probably cost about $50 or so, so if anyone is able to help with the cost that would be great.

  8. We would like to donate a Petco card for Tim’s dog’s food, etc. Please let us know how we can do that.

  9. If Tim would be interested in doing some yard work at my place in Wallingford, I could use some help with weeding and bulb planting and my young dog wouldn’t mind some playmates. I can get them to/from Ballard in my van. I can also help w/ that background check if that is still needed

  10. I have some food that I would like to give to Tim. Tell me how I can deliver it to him. Thank you

  11. Hi, I also have some painting that needs to be done inside my home and would love to find out if Tim is interested in this type of work. Please let me know!

  12. I was so touched reading this story! I live in Ballard and often walk through the business area. I am going to pick up a Fred Meyer gift card and carry it with me so I can give it to you when I see you. I would also like to hire Tim to do some painting. My dad was a union painter his entire life and he too worked for a wealthy apartment owner of a very large complex. It would have broken his heart to lose that job so I do this in his memory.

In fact your fanciful writing abilities has prompted me to start my own blog now. Actually the blogging is spreading its wings rapidly. Your write up is a fine example of it.
